The Baylor Art Student Exhibition (B.A.S.E.), a juried student exhibition held annually at Baylor University, provides an excellent opportunity for all Baylor students to participate. Sponsored by the Martin Museum of Art and the Department of Art and Art History, the B.A.S.E. experience aligns with some of Baylor’s core values for students:
- Recognize each other as equal and necessary creative partners.
- Embrace a willingness to take risks, be nimble, and remain flexible.
- Foster direct, respectful, and transparent communication.
- Share an understanding of the purposes of art and its audiences.
- Committed to experimentation, innovation, inclusion, diversity, and mutual growth.
- Encourage and promote the excitement of fair competition and camaraderie among students and faculty.
In addition to these core values, the B.A.S.E. experience allows students to share and highlight their diligent work and accomplishments in Studio Art courses while at Baylor University. Furthermore, this opportunity fosters deep connections between student peers, faculty and staff, parents and families, and the community.
The B.A.S.E. process provides opportunities for student artists to build and promote their future professional development; it reinforces the importance of artists as part of the workforce and agents of choice.
This showcase is always a highlight in the MMoA exhibition cycle as it highlights various methods, materials, and artistic voices.
The exhibition is juried. This means that an individual outside of the Baylor community is fairly and conscientiously appointed to make selections to be included in the final show. While not everyone who submits work for the B.A.S.E. will be selected for the final exhibition, it is vital to remember the spirit and enthusiasm of competitive opportunities. It is vital to remember how these experiences can bolster strength and spirit and provide necessary life skills for the professional world.
Process
All entries for the Baylor Art Student Exhibition will be submitted digitally. No artwork will be delivered to the Museum until the juror has selected which works will be included in the exhibition. Students who plan to enter will need to photograph their artwork in advance. Students may do this on their own or sign-up for the 3-day assisted photoshoot hosted by the Museum from March 3 - 5, 2025.
The juror will review all digital submissions to determine which artworks will be included in the exhibition. Students will be notified if their entries have been accepted into the exhibition and will be given time to prepare their work for professional display before dropping it off at the Museum. The juror will also select award winners in 8 categories and a Best of Show. Winners will be notified via email.
