Project Statement
In With the Old is a fictitious antique store located in Walnut, Iowa, and sells everything from vintage furniture to random knickknacks and collectibles. The store aims to put a more modern twist on things that are otherwise outdated, making the old new and in style once again. Items date back to the early 1900’s or as recent as the 1990’s, so products are nostalgic to people of all ages, including younger people who are into thrifting and have an appreciation for the antique or retro.
The brand identity for this project features an identity mark and a stationery set. I chose the colors brown and ivory to tie in the “old” aspect, and included a muted blue and green to give the brand some life without being too flashy. The logotype plays off of the store’s name and includes a modern twist on old-fashioned woodcut fonts. On the stationery set, I continued to establish the brand by replicating the “O” from the logo into a lacy border, again citing the antique with a contemporary spin.
I extended In With the Old’s brand to include a unique promotional package design. To draw new customers in at the store’s grand opening, the owners decided to make their extensive collection of antique teacups a special promotion. At the “An-tea-que Giveaway,” the first thirty customers to stop by are able to obtain a free teacup, wrapped in a special promotional teapot-shaped box with a teabag-shaped coupon inside. The limited-edition boxes would be assembled in the store prior to the opening event.
I poured a lot of thought into the novelty of enticing the customers with an entirely tea-themed experience. Creating a promotional package for a client that sells such a variety of items posed a challenge but the end result was creatively successful.
