Artist Statement: Karl Umlauf
Although I retired from Baylor in 2015 it has not interrupted my artistic career in moving forward. I have continued to exhibit in solo exhibitions and explored new ideas. The work I am exhibiting in the Retired Art Teachers Exhibition at the Martin Museum represents the past and the present. I continue to create with new ideas from my experiences in travel, research and drawings before transferring my creations to the canvas.
As always, the energy in my work germinates from the drawings I persue. Through this creative activity a metamorphosis occurs, enabling me to explore surfaces, structures and a synergy form which new concepts develop. When the work forms a new direction, I am increasingly aware of the qualities upon which the previous imagery was constructed, providing motivation for the journey ahead.
