Project Statement | Steamboat Resort

View Portfolio

Hayley Koumjian BFA SP25 Portrait

Steamboat Resort is a major ski area located in northwestern Colorado. The resort boasts 297 named trails over 2,965 acres and hosts more than 500,000 visitors a year. From adrenaline junkies to families seeking fun for all ages, steamboat caterers to every skier. The aim of this project was to update the Steamboat brand identity to better reflect its status as a globally recognized destination and a leading player in the ski industry.

The purpose of this redesign was to upgrade the Steamboat Ski Resort brand, giving it a more clean and modern feel. The current logo includes a flag that alludes to a steamboat, but lacks a reference to skiing or mountains. The process began with logo development, which focused on blending elements of a steamboat with skiing imagery.  After multiple sketches, the final logo design depicts a front-facing steamboat, with the bow lines forming a mountain shape. This design choice created a strong visual link between the resort’s name and the brand's purpose.

To complement the logo, I choose Gamay, a san serif typeface to reflect the simple shapes of the mark. I paired the font with ivy presto, a serif typeface to contrast Gamay. The original color palette of red and blue was refreshed to give the branding a cleaner and more contemporary feel. These updated colors helped to modernize the overall aesthetic.

The logo served as the foundation for the broader brand identity, guiding the art style of supporting elements like icons and patterns. For example, the mountain in the logo was adapted as a pattern and used across the branding. Additionally, the gondola artwork echoes the simple, playful style of the logo. These components cohesively expand the overall design.

The slogan, "Need to blow off steam? Let’s go ski!" was also developed to advertise the brand. Similarly to the logo, This slogan cleverly invites people to enjoy the therapeutic effects of the mountains while tying back to the  brand's name.

Overall, the redesign successfully modernized the Steamboat brand while combining the name and location visually. This new identity better communicates Steamboats status as a globally recognized destination and a leading player in the ski industry.
