Artist Statement

Ever since childhood, I’ve had an insatiable "outdoor itch" that’s never been fully satisfied. From playing in the greenbelt with childhood friends to leading a group of twelve on a backpacking adventure, I’ve always felt most alive in nature. As a woman who finds joy in empowering others, especially other women, it is challenging to navigate the space between
femininity and being an outdoorswoman. My interest dives deeply into this intersection, informed by my experiences as an outdoor guide.
The outdoor recreation industry has historically lacked female representation, and my work seeks to make space for women in these spaces. My outdoor pursuits—backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, mountain biking, and teaching a backpacking skills course—have all influenced my paintings, each capturing moments from my memories as an outdoor educator and recreationalist.
I use an electric color palette in my paintings to express the emotions I experience during moments of outdoor recreation. Through the exploration of line, color, shape, movement, and texture, I create layers of complexity that reflect my memories of these experiences. I invite the viewer on a journey of looking, encouraging them to uncover the hidden details woven into the overlapping layers.
Ultimately, my work isn’t just about nature; it’s about the women I’ve learned from, grown with, and empowered along the way. It’s a celebration of shared experiences in the great outdoors and the strength we find in each other.
