Andrea Renova - BFA Fiber Arts

Andrea Renova Portrait

Artist Statement

English

I have found that the way people perceive food, beyond sustenance, shapes the perceptions and assumptions they have about an individual. This body of work explores how my personal upbringing informs my relationship, and lack thereof, with Mexican culture.

Each work originates from an experience involving food that has impacted my relationship with my culture. I derive ingredients from these specific instances to produce dyes that I color fabric with to make quilted works.

I combine untraditional materials like rice with traditional shibori techniques to linger in the dying process. Within the individual works, I am spending time with the judgments and assumptions made about me surrounding food, as well as the rituals that food becomes a vessel for.
