Project Statement | The Bar S
“The Passion Project,” is a deeply personal exploration into the heart of what inspires me most—the legacy of my family. The result is a publication, brought together through my roles as a writer, illustrator, and photographer. Every page of this endeavor is a labor of love, capturing the essence of The Bar S, a ranch that has been an integral part of my family for generations.
As I delved into the conceptualization of my project, I found myself repeatedly drawn back to the roots that define me—the resilience, the stories, and the enduring spirit of my family. “The Passion Project” unfolds the rich history of The Bar S, providing a vivid portrayal of my family and their lives on the ranch.
The visual narrative within the book is meticulously crafted. Contemporary images of our present-day ranch, captured on my 35mm film camera, are interspersed with relics from family scrapbooks and old picture frames. I engaged in numerous conversations with family members over Thanksgiving and gatherings to compile mini interviews, each conversation unearthing stories linked with The Mighty Bar S. The only real color I chose for this book was a bright teal because it reminds me of my childhood home. My mom always had this blue in every accent piece of our house. Every sign knickknack and accent door was this exact shade of teal so I thought it would be fitting to bring that nostalgic color into this book. As for type, I chose the Thistails family as my display because I wanted a distressed type style that felt handwritten and weathered.
The Bar S has been a cornerstone in shaping the person I am today. The pride and values instilled by those who lived and worked on this remarkable piece of land have influenced me profoundly. Through the creation of this book, I have transformed those cherished stories into a narrative to be shared with everyone, to be a piece of our family history to be taught to the next Farrs.
