Project Statement | World of Naria

The World of Narnia was a passion project initially created as part of a publication design project intended to explore and celebrate the background of the beloved series by C.S. Lewis. As the title suggests, this project delves into the intricate world of Narnia, spanning its creation to its ultimate destruction. More than just a recounting of events, the project aims to provide insight into Lewis himself—who he was, why he wrote the Narnia series, and what he hoped to achieve with these books. Through careful analysis, I examine the biblical themes woven throughout the series, highlighting their direct connections to scripture. Lewis, a devout Christian, infused his work with allegorical significance, and this project seeks to bring those connections to light. Each book in the series carries a deeper meaning, often paralleling Christian teachings, and through my exploration, I break down how these elements manifest in the storylines and characters.
A significant portion of the project focuses on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the first published book in the series and arguably the most well-known. Here, I analyze the central characters, detailing their defining traits. From Aslan’s role as a Christ-like figure to the complex redemption arc of Edmund Pevensie, the book is filled with rich symbolism and layered character development. The White Witch represents ultimate evil and deception, while Lucy embodies faith and unwavering belief. By examining these figures, I highlight the depth of storytelling that makes the Narnia series more than just a children’s fantasy.
Beyond textual analysis, the visual and typographic choices in this project were heavily influenced by the whimsical nature of the Narnia stories. The typography reflects the magical and flowing narrative, using script elements to evoke a sense of wonder while maintaining readability. The serif fonts pay homage to the original typefaces used in the earliest publications, creating a sense of nostalgia. Additionally, the illustrations were designed to reference the classic artwork of Pauline Baynes, whose detailed line work and shading were an essential part of the original books. By incorporating similar techniques, this project seeks to capture the timeless charm of Narnia’s visual aesthetic. The color choices further enhance this effect, embracing a bright, joyful palette with expressive brushstrokes that bring energy and life to the designs. Altogether, this project is a celebration of Narnia’s magic, its literary significance, and the artistic legacy that continues to inspire generations.
